Gasoline has been delivered to Elliot Lake, allowing drivers to queue at the only working gas station in the city.

The gas station ran dry on Wednesday due to a shortage caused by a fire at an Imperial Oil refinery last week. The closest place to buy gasoline was nearly 60 kilometres away in the town of Blind River.

Imperial Oil promised Wednesday that it would deliver gasoline as soon as Thursday.

A fire Feb. 15 fire at Imperial’s Nanticoke refinery contributed to shortages at 75 of the company’s 400 Esso stations in Ontario. The problem was exacerbated by an ongoing strike at CN Rail, which has affected the company’s ability to transport gasoline.

The company, the largest petroleum supplier to the Ontario market, also provides gasoline to Canadian Tire, which has temporarily closed some of its gas bars.

The refinery, southwest of Hamilton, is being repaired and is expected to resume some production by the end of next week, but a company official said it will take more time before the supply problem is resolved.
