The number of states with average gas prices below $3 a gallon nearly doubled in the past 10 days to 27, but Idaho was not among them, AAA Idaho reported Thursday.

Growing gas and oil inventories have helped ease prices at the pump in most areas of the country, but Idahoans are paying 20 cents more a gallon on average than the rest of the U.S. AAA Idaho said Idaho pump prices are the seventh highest in the country.

The price includes a 25-cent state gasoline tax, the nation's 21st highest.

Based on AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, Idaho's average price for self-service gasoline is $3.197, down 8.5 cents from a record high of $3.28 set May 28. Meanwhile, the average U.S. price is $2.996, down 23 cents from a record high of $3.227 set May 24.

"The outlook for more price declines is far from certain," said AAA Idaho spokesman Dave Carlson. "Higher crude oil prices in the past week suggest a little more market apprehension, and a strike today in Nigeria will likely not help."
