Tunisia has awarded an oil and gas exploration permit to an Anglo-Dutch Shell subsidiary, Shell Tunisia, government officials said on Friday.

Under the production-sharing agreement, Shell Tunisia in partnership with Tunisian state oil firm Entreprise Tunisienne des Activites Petrolieres (ETAP), will invest $3.0 million in search and drilling work.

The two-year accord invloves an area of 5,140 square km (3,212 square miles) in the southern region of Gabes.

Tunisia, where more than 30 foreign oil companies are working, imports most of its fuel needs as its own oil output fell sharply in the previous decade due to ageing fields.
